Old Bones Submissions 2024

Old Bones 2024-25 Submission Guidelines

Henlo friends!

We have opened our submissions for this year's Volume of Old Bones!

What is Old Bones?

Old Bones is an Appalachian-based Literary Journal curated, compiled, and published by The Henlo Press, an indie publisher based in the KY/WV/OH tri-state. The journal features poetry, short fiction, and essays from writers at all points in their publishing journey from diverse backgrounds.

What should I send in?

Poetry! Short stories! Flash fiction! Creative non-fiction! Old Bones looks to cover it all!

We only ask that authors limit themselves to one submission per category. (Ex. 1 short story, 1-3 poems, one essay, 1-2 pieces of flash fiction, etc. So if you are a poet who writes short stories, you could submit your 1-3 poems AND a short story.)

Poetry

Authors may submit 1-3 poems for consideration.

Short Fiction/Essays/Creative Non-fiction

We ask that authors submitting short fiction, essays, or creative non-fiction keep word counts between 1,500 and 7,000 words.

Flash Fiction

The shortest of short stories -- flash fiction entries should be between 150-500 words. Authors may submit 1-2 flash fiction pieces for consideration.

Submission Fee

This year, there will be a $5 submission fee for each category you want to be considered. All fees collected will go towards printing fees and administration costs that help make this journal possible and ensure that we can provide every author published in this Volume with a copy of their own at no additional cost at the time of publication.

Author Copies

Authors with pieces published in this Volume can also purchase additional copies at cost + shipping & handling. Any copies an author purchases for themselves can then be resold by the author at full price at author events, readings, etc.

Additional Note:

Submission of work does not guarantee publication. While we would love to publish everyone, it simply isn't possible. Volume Two of Old Bones will have space to feature around 20-25 authors, and each piece submitted will be juried by four team members.

We don't shy away from adult language or themes. That being said, we also will not accept work that may be racist, homophobic, pornographic, or promotes hate in any way.

Are you ready?
